The troop directory is updated and now available to download on the troop website. You can download it from this blog post, or scroll towards the bottom of the right sidebar to the Downloads section.

» Download Troop Directory now

Adobe Reader is required to open the file. The PDF file is also password protected. Obviously, we’re not going to give out the password on this website, so you’ll have to contact a committee member for the password. We’ll also be trying to email it to everyone along with the password.

The directory may seem a little odd and that’s because it’s meant to be printed and put together as a booklet.

Thanks to the committee for putting this together.

Pleasant Valley- Chris will send Jen information about the flags so she can contact the HOA for it to be sent out to the neighborhood. Keith will ask the boys when they would like to do the walk through Pleasant Valley to do the door hangers. Chris Swanson will be doing to the door hangers. Jen will remind Keith about talking with the boys. Jen will also have a flag in her yard to advertise to the rest of the neighborhood. It was discuss to keep this as a regular route and not have any boy obligated to do this route and the flags will be kept at the church and not at anyone’s house.  It was advise that there are several boys that live in the area that not one or tow boys would need to be obligated to do this route. It will be assigned just like the others. It was also discuss to include the 8 flags that the Swanson’s has in their neighborhood into this route in turn the flags should be back to the church but further discussion was table for now.

Other Items-

Jim Brinkman gave brief info to Jen about a Mountain Shadows Concert in the Chipeta Park and suggested having the boys scouts there with the flags. The scouts will be approach to see what type of involvement and Jim will be asked to contact the POC for the concert to see maybe if we could do a flag ceremony instead of having the boys standing on the sidewalks holding flags. We need more info before we can proceed with this.

Chris Swanson advise that the new website is up and running. It is more like a blog. It still has a little tweaks to work out but it is free of cost. Please sign in to the website and sign up to receive email update.

Now that summer activities are winding down, we are ready to get back on a regular schedule of committee meetings. Due to not being able to fit in a July meeting earlier in the month, we will be having a meeting this Tuesday July 31 at 6PM.

Starting in August, we will move to a regular meeting schedule of the second Tuesday of each month at 6PM. All meetings will be at the church immediately before the Scout meeting. The August meeting will be onTuesday August 14th.

ALL parents are welcome. We would love more involvement even if you can only join us for the meetings.

Please email me if you have any questions.

Thanks!

You can now download and print two new useful files to download and print at the BSA Troop 287 website:

  1. BSA Parent Permission Form
  2. Road to First Class Study Flash Cards

The links to download the documents can be found toward the bottom of the website’s right sidebar.

It looks like this:

Links and downloads

Look for the green sign titled “Useful Links & Download Documents.” Both documents require the free Adobe Acrobat reader (almost all computers and smart phones can display and print these files). But if you don’t have the Acrobat Reader, you can download and install the software here:

» Free Adobe Acrobat Reader

The flash cards require a fair amount of assembly after printing. The instructions are on the printed sheets, themselves. Simply cut on the dotted lines and fold on the solid lines.

The flash cards cover nearly everything the boys need to know between Scout and First Class (according to the most recent Scout Handbook). The questions are on one side, the answers are on the other. There are several advantages to having the flash cards:

  • it puts the information into bulleted items (sometimes, the Handbook is narrative)
  • it allows friends and family to test the scout
  • the cards are color-coordinated so you can quickly jump from one rank to another
  • once printed, cut, folded, and laminated, the study cards are portable and can be shared
  • it allows scoutmasters to consistently test the boys for scoutmaster conferences … same questions, same answers
Swanie is the editor of the flash cards. They were created with Adobe Illustrator CS5. The files are still editable, if you’re a graphic artist type with the same or better software.

Please help your scout Be Prepared for their scoutmaster conference and board of review.  They should be in their full uniform, field shirt, hat, troop nekerchief, and slide as a minimum.  If they have scout pants or shorts and a merit badge sash they should wear those as well.  They should be presentable (shirt tucked in, hair combed, face clean, shoes tied, etc).  The scouts should also have their Boy Scout Handbook and any advancement guides.

It is recommended they review prior to a scoutmaster conference.  The SMC should be a time for the scout to show that they have mastered the scout skills and knowledge and are ready to advance to the next rank.  Swanie has created some flash cards that have questions that we ask and the answers.  If you do not have a copy please feel free to email myself or swanie.  northcscs@msn.com

If you have any questions please feel free to contact myself or any of the Assistant Scoutmasters.

This is your chance to get your scout invovled with a merit badge class at the Zoo. I just registered my scout and myself as an adult chaparone. There are 10 spots available and this class will fill quickly. I can take 4 additional scouts in my vehicle and you are of course welcome to make your own plans. The uniform is the Field Uniform and hat. Scouts should also bring a water bottle, and pen or pencil. Connor has taken two of the zoo’s offerings and they have been excellent! Register your scout on the zoo’s website and send me an email if you are intested in attending. I will print blue cards and have Mr. Moore sign off before the class.

Troop 287 flag lowering ceremony

Here are the boys at their camp site at Camp Alexander looking sharp and conducting their own flag lowering ceremony. This was on Friday night during the parents’ visit. From the looks and sounds of it, all went well. Fun was had, spirits were high, much was achieved, and everyone was safe.

20120708-111856.jpg

The boys are all packed and ready to head to Camp A!

Our troop camping trip in June was a 15-mile backpacking trip through Lost Creek Wilderness Area. This coincided with Father’s Day weekend. I took several good photos and hope to post here to the new website.

First, a huge thank you goes out to Steve Windom who maintained and hosted the troop’s website for the past several years! Steve did a great job and has always been an awesome contributor to many aspects of the troop’s success. The website was just one of them.

Steve has now passed on the duties of web to me, Swanie.

Like Steve, I’m pretty handy with the web stuff and decided to make several changes:

First, Steve had always hosted the website on his own personal resources. So, we’ve changed that. This website is now hosted and will soon be registered on a generic hosting account at DreamHost. The nice thing about DreamHost is they offer free web hosting for non-profit organizations. So, we’re currently applying for that status. So, this website should now costs no individual or the troop anything.

Second, Steve built the previous site on Joomla. I’m not as versed at Joomla as he is, so I have rebuilt the site on WordPress which, like Joomla, is a free content management system – again, costing no one or the troop any money. Amazing, huh? This stuff used to be quite time consuming and costly to build. Now its super fast and free. And it works really well. And it’s easy to use.

Next, as you’ll notice, the site is now pretty much just one page with a blog of news and events and all the information on the sidebar. The aim here is to try to make it easier to ‘put’ and ‘get’ information for the troop. At the same time, it has useful information for new visitors.

At the time I’m writing this blog post, I still have more features to add, but out of the gate you will now be able to do following:

  • subscribe by email to get alerts anytime something new is posted to the website … you can opt out anytime.
  • multiple people will be granted authorship status and can post information to the blog using several methods … 1.) login to the website itself and write a blog post, 2.) send an email to a ‘secret’ email address, and 3.) use the free WordPress mobile app.
  • people can write comments which everyone else can see … this eliminates reply to all email chains that drive us all nuts. This records conversations and anyone can add a comment at any time. You can even choose to receive an email alert anytime anyone else comments.
  • Send the troop leaders an email using a contact form
  • Download forms (in .pdf format)

More information about an events calendar is coming. I have some research to do on that, but will try to get a nice calendar feature up as soon as I can.
