Hi there Troop 287,

It is that time again for the Troop Committee Meeting.  We encourage and welcome all parents to attend this meeting.  Come and see what the committee does for your scout.  We are an important part or the process.

We will meet at 6:30 on Tuesday July 9th at the Wilson United Methodist Church.

Hope to see you then.

Jen Jirous – Troop Committee Chair

Hi there,

Sorry it took me so long to get to this.  It has been a busy month.

Troop 287 Committee Meeting Minutes

June 11, 2013

Present were:  Kathy Kaelin, Dave Krzemien, Dan Rodriguez and Tom Sharp

Approval of Minutes: Dan moved to approve the May 2013 Minutes – Dave 2nd.  All voted to approve.

Scoutmaster Report: No Report

Advancements Report:  Joyce was not present – Dave and Dan reported that Troopmaster is not updated.  Both Stefan and Andrew F had merit badges that have been awarded that were not in Troopmaster.  This needs to be discussed further when Joyce and Keith are present.

Treasurer Report:  Kathy handed out the Treasurer Report. We are still within budget.  Joyce motioned to approve the Budget by Email – Dan 2nd – All voted in favor.

Kathy reported that a scout has accepted the donated monies for the 2014 Philmont Trip.  This means we have our minimum number of scouts and adults signed up.

Kathy presented the Scholarship Application Form for consideration.  There were many items to change discussed.  Kathy will make the changes and bring next month for the committee to consider again and this will be the basis for the Policy that needs to be written.

Flags Discussion:  Kathy transferred the monies from the Flag Account to the Scout account based on the policy of even money distribution and $1.25 per Flag – AM and PM.  A breakdown of the distribution was emailed to the scouts participating.

Other Items:

Applications – Completed and Stamped by Council: Kathy asked who is keeping the completed Scout and Adult Applications.  Tom should get the Charter Org copy and the Unit Copy goes to Dan who will update Troopmaster and then file in the filing cabinet.  Kathy turned in the applications that had been processed by Council for one of the new boys and the new committee member.

New Parent Survey:  Kathy has two Parent Surveys – Committee decided they should go to the Committee Chair and Scoutmaster so they are aware of the potential of the new parents.

Old Troop Files:  Kathy cleaned out the filing cabinet when the Troop’s items were moved to the new closet.  She is in the process of scanning the items for an electronic copy of the items and creating folders for the paperwork backup.  It was decided that if we have an electronic backup that the paper only needs to be kept for 2 years.

Waldo Canyon Burn Scar Clean-Up:  Tom announced that Wilson Church is participating in a Clean Up on June 29th.  Scouts are asked to come with the Church.  Kathy will post this on the Website.

Next Meeting – June 9th – 6:30 PM

Meeting Reminder

BSA Troop 287 —  June 17, 2013 — Leave a comment

June 18, will be the last meeting that Connor and I will be able to make for sure.

Scouts that went to summer camp and participated in the First Class Center need to bring their books so I can initial off all of those requirements they completed. This information has already been entered into Troopmaster but we want to complete the book records too.

This will also be the last opportunity to complete any merit badges that I have been working with the scouts.

Connor and I have really enjoyed being part of Troop 287 for the last two years and we look forward to establishing the Troop 287 East Coast Annex.

Yours in Scouting,
Will

For those Scouts participating in the Personal Fitness MB we’ll be meeting at Eagleview Middle School at 6:30 pm tomorrow (Tuesday, 18 June).  Please show up in shorts, Troop T-shirt, and running shoes.  We’ll be stretching, running, and doing pushups, situps, and pullups for the initial fitness assessment.  All participating Scouts need to have a current Boy Scout physical. There will be several BORs tomorrow at the church and those Scouts need to show up at the church at 7 pm.  If you are NOT participating in the personal fitness MB and don’t have a BOR, you can either show up at 6:30 pm at Eagleview to help with with the assessment, or show up at the church at 7 pm.  We’ll have a closing ceremony at the church for all Scouts at 8:30 pm (I’ll transport all Scouts at Eagleview to the church in my minivan).

Hi there,

If you are a scout that needs some service hours here is your chance.  Or anyone else who would like to volunteer for this event.

There is an organized Clean Up Day on June 29th.  Anyone wishing to participate should meet at the WUMC at 8:30 am.  You will be working with CUSP and Michael Kempton on his Eagle Scout Project.  I think it sounds like a worthy cause that will directly impact the community we live in.

You will carpool to the Ute Pass Elementary School for a light breakfast and safety briefing.  The job for the day will be to remove debris from the area around the creek to help insure the creek will stay within its banks if there is a rain event over the Waldo Canyon burn scar.

This can have a very positive effect on homes and lives in the Ute Pass and Manitou Springs area.

There will be some release forms that will have to be filled out on the day of the event.

Please contact Tom Sharp Asst Scoutmaster if you are planning to go so he can update you with any further information.  His number is 651-4933.

Thanks, Tom Sharp

Hi Troop 287,

Well Summer is here and with that is the Flag Fundraiser.  Flag Day is this Friday, June 14th and is one of the days we put out the Flags for our customers.

Because the older boys are going to Sea Base this Thursday we are loosing some of our most dedicated scouts and route drivers.  We will need some additional volunteers to fill in the gaps.

Please let your scout know if they will be able to participate and if you as a parent can volunteer to drive either the AM/PM or both.  We will have signup sheets at the meeting on Tuesday.  We will not be handing out flyers so it should go pretty quickly.  Remember we will meet at the Barn at 6:00am for the AM Route and 6:00 PM for the Evening Routes.

If you or your scout will not be there on Tuesday please email me — kkaelin@comcast.net — directly and let me know if you can participate.

Happy Scouting and I will see you all on Friday.

Kathy Kaelin – Troop 287 Treasurer/Camp Coordinator

The Troop 287 Honor Guard posts the colors at Camp Alexander this morning. They practiced an hour in the rain on Thursday evening and it showed. They did an excellent job!

Personal_Fitness

For those Scouts that need the personal fitness merit badge we will work on requirements over the summer.  We started the badge last week for Scouts that were at the meeting.  We distributed worksheets and assigned some homework for the Scouts.

All Scouts that participate in this merit badge will require a physical exam that remains current for the duration of the badge.

Merit badge requirements include taking initial aerobic fitness, flexibility, muscular strength, and body composition tests.  Scouts will then complete a 12 week fitness training program of their design and then reaccomplish the tests to measure improvement.

For Scouts that weren’t at the last meeting I can get them moving on the merit badge next time we meet.

Hi Troop 287,

I got to spend the day at Camp Alexander yesterday and watched the boys have a great time.  It is so freeing for them to be able to let loose and just be themselves — with some guidance lol.  I got to see most of them in a merit badge class — they seemed to be tolerating the boring part pretty well and really liked the rest of the stuff.  We had the first Campfire of the evening.  All the boys were singing, dancing and having a blast.

I wanted to post some information about Friday Night Dinner and Campfire.

1.  Be ready for a hike — no open toed shoes or sandals.  You will be hiking for a mile from the parking lot to the camp.  They are in camp Kiowa which is at the top of Cardiac Hill (very appropriately named).

2.  Dinner is at 5:15 so you want to get there early so you can see the campsite.  (It takes about an hour and 15 minutes to get to the camp from the West Side – then you have to add in time for the hiking.) — You will pay for your dinner at the Camp Office which is just before you get to the main lodge.

3.  Bring something to keep you dry, warm and a water bottle to drink, and don’t forget the sunscreen, a hat, and a flashlight for the walk back to the car.  There are no street lights at camp.

So now for the good stuff.  Pictures.  — I tried to get all the boys — if I missed your son I apologize.

Hi Troop 287,

The next Committee Meeting is scheduled for June 11 at 6:30 pm at the Wilson United Methodist Church.  All parents and leaders are welcome and encouraged to attend.

See you then.

Kathy Kaelin – Troop 287 Treasurer/Camp Coordinator

At last night’s meeting we went over the packing lists, class schedules, program fees and most importantly the snacks. We want to remind our scouts to bring a cot, sleeping pad and winter weight sleeping bag. The cot is so you do not have to sleep on the plywood platforms. The sleeping pad is to help insulate and make the cot more comfortable. The winter weight sleeping bag is so your not cold at night!

We do have 3 scouts that have not turned in a physical form with parts A,B and C. (Franklin, Nate, Patrick) Camp A will not allow you to stay without a completed physical. So please do not forget it. We also need our traditional permission form and I will have extras printed out on Sunday. Camp A sent out a message advising us to ask if your scout has had a fever over 100 degrees, vomiting or diarrhea the previous 72 hours before camp. Scouts that meet any of these three criteria will not be allowed to attend summer camp. We will ask you when you drop off on Sunday. Camp Alexander Logo

We are meeting at the church parking lot this Sunday at 10 am for a 10:30 am departure. If for some reason you are running late please call me on my cell phone 719-322-1934. The travel uniform is the Class A shirt. Scouts should have a sack lunch. We will be returning to the Church Parking lot on Saturday, June 8 shooting for an arrival time of 9 am.

Your Scout(s) did a great job providing this service. I was about to put up my house flag and as I opened the door, there stood the flag waving in the breeze. Please thank them for me.

Hope you are having a good summer!

Best, Ole
