Hi there Troop 287,

The Court of Honors are where we handle many of the finances involved with being in the troop.  Items that need to be taken care of this quarter are:

1.  Final Payment for Summer Camp at Camp Alexander.  For most of you that will be $90.00 per scout.

2.  Dues payments for new scouts that have not paid yet and a few current scouts.

3.  Scholarships — The Troop Committee is in the process of establishing a Scholarship program for the Troop.  We are limited on funds at this time and will have a donation jar for anyone who would like to make a contribution.

4.  The Troop Committee has made the conscious decision not to charge for the food at Court of Honors this year.  In it’s place we ask that each person coming to the Court of Honor bring a can of food for the Church’s Food Bank Donation.

As always I will have the printouts of the Scout and Adult Accounts.

Hope to see all of you there.  The food is going to be AWESOME!!!!!!!!

The location for the fishing camp out has been changed to Camp Farish. This is a shorter drive and will accommodate several families that will be coming out on Saturday. In addition the fishing reports for 11 mile canyon are not good whereas Farish has a stocked pond. We will be starting the fishing merit badge for those scouts that are interested.

When: Meeting at Wilson UMC at 5:30 departing by 6 pm on Friday, May 17, returning Sunday, May 19 by 10 am (likely earlier).
What to bring: Sack lunch for Friday evening, camping essentials, fishing pole, tackle, net, bait (if not using lures), sunscreen, camping chair, PERMISSION SLIP (click here to download now). We travel to and from events in Class A uniform.
How Much: $15 due Friday.

POC is Mr. North, 719-322-1934, northcscs@msn.com

Adults that are planning to fish do not need a valid Colorado Fishing License (Federal property).  Everyone over 16 years of age that is fishing is required to purchase an AFA fishing stamp at the trading post for $7.50.  The trading post also has poles and tackle for rent (some bait too).

The Citizenship in the World Merit Badge (CIW) is nearing a conclusion. It is possible for scouts to finish this Tuesday and be presented the badge for the Court of Honor the following week, but it will take some effort. We will have a guest speaker that is a high school foreign exchange student from Spain that will come talk to the group for 15-20 minutes about her country and culture. ALL Scouts can attend but this is required for the CIW class.

The other outstanding requirement is &B. The scouts need to visit a web site of an International News Organization or foreign government and find a news story about a human right realized in the United States that is not recognized by another country. Write a short 1 or 2 sentences about that article.

The final requirement is to complete the workbooks. Scouts should fill out the first question which we did not cover in class. The question is to answer what does citizenship in the world mean to you. The easiest way to start is to repeat the question as a statement and fill in what it means to you. Should be something that shows thought (should be a requirement for all badges).

The backpacking trip scheduled for May 3 has been re-scheduled for 17-19 May. The format has been changed to a Fishing Camp out. We are working on three options for the location. Details will be covered at the May 6 Troop meeting.

red kickball approachThe scouts of Troop 287 are playing kickball on Tuesday, May 7, 6 p.m. at Chipeta Elementary School. Meeting will go to 7:30-8 p.m. Uniform is Class B. Wear athletic shoes.

In the event of bad weather, we’ll meet at Wilson Church at the same time.

May 7 is also the last day the boys can get in a Scoutmaster conference before May 21st Court of Honor.

Hi Troop 287,

This is a reminder that tomorrow – Saturday April 27th is Clean up day at the Church.  This Church is our Charterd Organization.  Your help is needed.

Time is 8:00am – 12:30pm — Lunch will be provided.  Scouts should wear their Class B Uniforms.

The Church is also trying to fill an ARC truck with donations — if you have anything that you could donate bring the items by in the morning so we can get the truck filled up.

Hope to see many of you there.

Hi Troop 287,

We are having a special meeting to discuss the Flag Fundraiser.  This is the biggest fundraiser the scouts have. The Troop and Scouts together have earned close to $50,000 in the past 10 years.  We are still looking for a parent volunteer to help with this program!!!! – Our current Flag Coordinator is leaving us after this year.  This is your opportunity to find out more about the position and be able to shadow with someone this year that has lots of experience.  You do not need to be a Registered Leader to help with this program.

Discussion Items will include — but may not be limited to:

  • Future of the program
  • How to structure the routes
  • Where and when do we want to do marketing
  • Criteria for distribution of monies earned by the Scouts.

We would love some new ideas, comments and participation in this program.  I hope to see many of you at the meeting next Tuesday.

Thanks,

Kathy Kaelin – Troop 287 Treasurer

CookORee Forms

The Cook-O-Ree is this weekend. Scouts that signed up were given a packing list and a set of permission forms for this camp out. The Council is requiring us to show a completed medical form for all scouts in attendance in addition to the standard permission form. If your scout does not have these completed forms they cannot attend. If you have already completed a medical form for summer camp then send a copy of that completed form or one from last year if it was completed after May 1st. Otherwise please complete this form and bring with you to the drop off at Wilson UMC at 5:30 pm on Friday.

We also sent home a packing list which was taken from the boy scout handbook. We recommend being prepared for cold nights. Friday evening meal is a sack lunch that you provide.  If you have any questions feel free to call me (C) 322-1934 or Mr. Moore.  See you at the church!

VR,
Will

Wilson United Methodist ChurchOn Sat, April 27, 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Wilson United Methodist Church, our troop’s charter organization, would like volunteers to help clean up the church, move supplies, and other details to make our meeting place and the church a nicer place.

Boys should wear their Class B uniforms. Family and friends can also volunteer. Lunch will be provided.

Hey Troop 287

There will be a Parents Meeting for all those signed up to attend Camp Alexander this summer — and for any new scout parents that want to know all about it and decide if it is right for their new scout.

Please be there at 7:00pm — it is Game Night for the scouts so they will be off having fun.

Don’t forget to check out the page dedicated to information about this camp.  There are forms to download and a Parents Guide you can print and go over before this meeting.

Hope to see you all there.

Advancements Report – Joyce No report
New Permission Form for Activities – Dave K – Andrea made motion and Jen 2nd all in favor. Jen will email PDF to Swanie to put on website. Dave also mention that whenever the troop does anything away from the church that a tour permit plan has to be completed. Dave will advise Keith that it will be his reasonability to submit them online from now on. Jen will look into the form and see if it can be posted on troop website
Camp Cards- Kathy gave to Keith- He will pass out to scouts tonight and all money and unsold cards will need to be turned back in by April 23rd.
Jen Took over notes:
Welcome / Informational Packets – It was suggested to add a photo disclosure form to the new scout packet so we have permission to put pictures on the web and other troop materials. Jen will work with Kathy on this.
Dan asked about the activity roster list on Troopmaster. He will check Troopmaster to see is this is being done and/or when the last activity was logged. He will work with Keith on making sure this is done and draft an instruction sheet for the ASMs so this will be done in the future. The importance of having this up to date on-line was discussed.
Andrea passed out Troop Directory. The committee agreed that it should be mailed to the adult listed members with a request for permission to distribute this to all parents. If given permission, we should have it available at the next COH.
Scholarship Guidelines – The scholarship application was distributed. The committee suggested that we add criteria for applying and discuss at the next meeting. Dave suggested that we look at scouting.org for an example. Jen will research this.
Committee Member Roles – roles should be revisited each year and allow for shifting of responsibilities. It was highly encouraged to get new members just present at meetings so they are familiar with roles as members leave and those positions need to be filled. This will be highlighted at the next COH. We just need people to attend so they are familiar with the process!
Flags / Policy and Procedures manual – Dave and Jen will meet with the Rotary. Dave will set a date/time. An additional meeting on April 30th at 6:30 that focuses on flags was decided.
Other-
Tom will approach Pastor Dave about the Scout Membership Policy and update the committee at the next meeting.
Dave K suggested that we buy a couple cases of paper for the church to pay them back for the printing we do. The committee approved. Jen will work with Kathy on this.
Dave informed the committee that Bill Chadick is moving and would like to recognize him with an award at the next COH. The committee approved and will discuss at the next meeting during COH planning.
Tom will look into the God and Country activity to do in conjunction with the church. He will update the committee at the next meeting
Jen reported that the troop met the Friends of Scouting goal so the troop will receive free advancements for the next year. Kudos to donators!
Next Meeting – April 9, 6:30PM
Adjourned 8:15 PM

BSA Troop 287 —  March 23, 2013 — Leave a comment

Just in time for Spring and for our new Scouts, the “Knots Guide” is a highly rated knot tying app that you can download to help learn knots.  The link below takes you to a site that has reviews of the app and the sites where it is available for download.  Enjoy Spring Break!

Hi there Troop 287 — This post is for all scouts 14 and older.  There is a program for the older scouts.  Be brave and pledge to be tobacco, drug and alcohol free and you could win a trip to a High Adventure Camp.  Read the post below and follow the link to enter.   Good Luck — Kathy Kaelin

New post on Bryan on Scouting

What’s the most positive decision your Scouts could make?

by Bryan

For teens, it just might be saying no — to tobacco, to drugs, and to alcohol.

And now, courageous Scouts and Venturers who pledge to remain tobacco-, drug- and alcohol-free have the opportunity to to win an all-expenses-paid trip to any of the BSA’s high-adventure bases: Philmont Scout Ranch, Northern Tier, or Florida Sea Base. Everything is included — roundtrip flights, ground transportation, program fees — for an enviable prize valued at $3,000.

The sweepstakes is brought to you by Boys’ Life. In other words, sorry, but adults aren’t eligible to enter. It’s solely for registered Boy Scouts or Venturers between the ages of 14 and 17 at time of entry.

So, leaders, send your Scouts to the Trail of Courage contest page to enter. All they do is take the pledge and submit their contact information. It’s simple, but hurry — the contest ends at 11:59 p.m. ET on March 31.

The drawing will yield just one randomly selected winner, but I think all would agree that any Scout or Venturer who takes the pledge to steer clear of tobacco, drugs, and alcohol is winning at life.
