Just a reminder for the scouts that completed the Swimming Merit Badge. Bring in your completed worksheets and blue cards so we can have those signed and submitted for the next COH.

Mr. Warner

The new Troop 287 T-Shirts have arrived and will be distributed at the January 8th Troop Meeting.

If you cannot make this meeting — dont worry we will hold on to it for you.  See you then.

Hi there Troop 287,

I am sure by now you heard the great news that we were lucky winners of the Philmont Adventure Camp Registration Lottery for 2014.  The dates are June 10-22, 2014.

I know it seems like a very long time from now but we actually have to get our reservation deposit in by the end of February.  We have spots for 2 to 4 Adults and 8 to 10 Scouts (Depending on how many adults sign up).  The deposit is $100.00 and you must complete the attached Agreement.

Because this is a high adventure camp there is a age restriction of 14 years old at the beginning of the camp — or completed 8th grade and a minimum of 13 years old.

Please see your scoutmaster or me to get your reservation in.

Kathy Kaelin – Treasurer and Camp Coordinator -Troop 287

2014 Philmont Adventure Camp Agreement

Merry Christmas everyone!

I noticed that the Pikes Peak web site had a flyer for the upcoming Harlem Globetrotters basketball event at World Arena. The Harlem Globetrotters also have a special patch for scouts. We decided to attend as a family and thought we would post it in case anyone else would like to attend. We are sitting in the Upper Bowl area where tickets are $23 each (and includes the patch). You can request to sit near the other Troop 287 group in the comments of the order form. There are less expensive seats for $16, which also include the patch.

December 23 – Soup Kitchen

December 25 and January 1st – No Meeting

January 8th – Regular Meeting

Keith mentioned that he will have some repairs to the trailer done in December and he will save the receipts for this year’s budget.

Kathy handed out the T-Shirt Order proposals.  Keith had asked that we look at the possibility of getting the high tech sweatshirts instead of the cotton ones.  Those are $40.00 each.  The committee voted to get extra T-shirts and extra Sweatshirts – Proposal #5 from the attached list.  Kathy will also send out an email to the troop to see if anyone would like to order the new sweatshirts to see if we can sell any more.  And she will contact the three people who ordered the cotton one’s and see if they want to upgrade for an additional $20.00 each.  The orders will be taken out of 2012 budget – initial cash outlay will be approx $700.00 but the net after the sweatshirts are sold will be $300.00.  Order deadline will be December 18th meeting.

Advancements Report:  Joyce was not here so this was deferred to January

Treasurer Report:  Kathy handed out the Treasurer Report (attached).  We are still significantly under budget – based on this the committee decided the T-Shirts should be an expense for 2012 even though it is not budgeted.  The Treasurer Report was approved.

Budget 2013 discussion was deferred till January 2013 Committee Meeting.

Journey to Excellence:  Jen was not at the meeting so this was deferred.

Flags Discussion:  Dave announced that if a parent does not volunteer then he will take the flags back for one year only.  If we could get a parent to shadow him this year they could take it over next year.

Discussion of a raise for the boys was deferred as it has a direct impact on the budget.

Other Items:

Philmont 2014: Kathy announced that we were accepted to go to Philmont for 2014 – Kathy handed out the sign up form for the High adventure camp – The age limit is age 14 by the start of camp – or completed the 8th grade and at least 13.   Deposits are due by the February Court of Honor to secure your spot.

Pack Recruiting:  The need for recruiting of local Packs was discussed.  The Committee asked if there could be an event scheduled for January – possibly an outdoor Saturday Event at the Church where Webelos could come and go – with several different stations – and possibly a orienteering course.   Keith was going to take it back to the boys for their input.

Kathy will get contact information for area packs and send out the information once it is confirmed.

It was decided that an event needs to occur earlier in the year – and be an event geared towards the Webelo scouts and not just an invitation to a Court of Honor.

Friends of Scouting:  If we reach the yearly goal for this – Our Rank advancements for 2013 will be paid for by council.  This will be scheduled for a Court of Honor meeting – probably in February.

Recharter:  Kathy reported that all scouts except one has paid their registration fee.  The one scout that has not has been contacted and is not able to pay it at this time.  The committee voted to pay the fee for him and Kathy will collect it in 2013.

Adults  — Kathy reported that all adults have paid for recharter except for a couple of ASM.  Nickolas Hasse will be sending his registration fee to Kathy via mail and hopes to be more involved with the troop this year.  The others will be dropped from the Roster and if they decide to rejoin they will have to fill out a new adult application.  Jim Brinkman has not completed his application yet.  He did not have to pay as he is a multiple with Pack 26.

Kathy, Tom and Jen will get together and complete the Recharter online based on this information.

The meeting was adjourned – Next Meeting – January 8th at 6:30pm

Mr. Warner

The post Swimming Merit Badge appeared first on BSA Troop 287.

Tonight, several of the scouts of T287 (Tyler, Michel, Franklin, Sam M., Ben, Nick, and Stefan) attended the D11 school board meeting as a requirement for the Communications merit badge.

For the boys who are working on the Communications MB but couldn’t attend, they can watch the replay of the meeting on TV. Here’s the information from the D11 meeting:

District 11 board meetings can been seen live Wednesday nights on Comcast Channel 16 and Falcon Broadband channel 73, Regular meetings begin at 6:30 p.m. and Work sessions begin at 6:00 p.m. unless otherwise posted, and are rebroadcast on Friday mornings at 10am and Saturday and Sunday evenings at 6:00 p.m.

To still get credit, the boys must watch the meeting and be able to answer the following questions:

Who’s the superintendent of D11?

How did they start the meeting?

What sports teams were recognized at the beginning of the meeting?

What organization presented a check for D11 arts program? And How much money was the check for?

What type of audit was presented? How was it presented?
BONUS QUESTION FOR COOL POINTS:
How much “liability” will d11 take on next year?
If the boys miss the replays of tonight’s meeting, they’ll have to attend another school board (or government) meeting on their own with a parent or guardian and write a report on how the meeting was conducted and what topics were discussed?

Congrats to Cristain!

OA Annual Dues

BSA Troop 287 —  November 24, 2012 — Leave a comment

OA Annual Dues

Attached is a sheet describing how to pay dues for the Order of the Arrow. Our two scouts that went through ordeal last August have already paid for 2013. Everyone else has expired. To be eligible to wear the lodge flap all members must pay dues annually. We are trying to make a larger presence at OA functions. I am encouraging our Ordeal members to go for Brotherhood membership at the next fall fellowship.

If you pay before the end of they year the dues is only $12. On January 1st, the dues goes up to $15 per year. If you have any questions feel free to contact me. Will North, Troop 287 OA Adviser.

The Boy Scouts of America Supply division will be hosting a black Friday sale this year. It is a great opportunity to stock up on quality gear for your scout. This year’s sale is 20% off most items in the store plus free shipping for orders over $75. They are excluding uniforms this year but Thurlo scout socks are on sale for a buy 3 get one free price. Most apparel items are on sale including panther hats (built in lights), Jackets, rain gear, back packs, belts, etc. Other great items your scout will appreciate include BSA pocket knives, sleeping bags, and other camping gear. Sale starts at midnight tonight and runs all day Friday only.

BSA CourtOfHonor Nov2012

Dillan receives his Second Class rank.

We had a successful November 2012 Court of Honor. All enjoyed a Thanksgiving turkey dinner. We heard a speech from Andrew as part of his Communications MB. The event was MC’d by Stefan and Andrew. All boys who sold more than $500 in popcorn threw a pie in Mr. Swanson’s face.

Hi there Troop 287

Hope you are all ready to eat some Turkey!!!! I know it is a bit early but this turkey you don’t have to cook. Please be on time so you will have first pick of all the fine fixings.

We are asking the Troop Families to bring some supporting dishes:
Last Name — A-H Dessert
I-P Salad
R-Z Side Dish

Cost for the COH is free but we ask that you bring one non-perisable food item per person to be donated to the Church’s Food Pantry.

There will be lots of Financial items to be taken care of at this Court of Honor as well.
1. 2013 — Summer Camp Registration — Deposit of $100.00 is due
2. T-Shirt and Sweat Shirt Orders will be taken
3. Registration Dues will be collected — $15.00 per scout/adult
4. Boys Life Subscription Renewal — $12.00 per family
5. Popcorn Money will be Collected.

I will be sending the T-Shirt order form out with an email. Each Scout will receive a new Troop 287 Short Sleeved T-Shirt for free.  If they opt to receive the long sleeved T-Shirt instead they will have to pay the $1.50 difference in price.  If you want additional Shirts or the Hooded Sweatshirt complete that part of the form as well.

I will have samples of the T-Shirts so you can see the quality of the shirt and to help determine what size to order.

Thanks for your attention and I will see you all next week.

Troop 287’s November 6 meeting was game night and the troop went bowling. Fun was had by all … oddly enough, or maybe not, the lane that had the bumpers up ended up with the higher scores for the evening.

Cristian getting ready to throw a strike!

family-life-merit-badgeIf the boys began their chores right after we began the family life merit badge, they can be finished with all requirements by November 13. I am asking that they all turn in their FULLY completed merit badge workbook as soon as possible. I prefer that they get the workbook to me at the beginning of the meeting on November 6 (at the bowling alley), so I can check it to make sure they have everything. Then they can just turn in their chores on November 13. If not, then they should turn in the completed workbook and the chore sheet on November 13. I will only be available at the beginning of each of those meetings, however. They should find me as soon as they get there.

If they do not turn in the proper documentation by November 13, they will not be recognized for this merit badge at the November COH. Regardless, they should finish this Eagle-required merit badge as soon as possible. As soon as I have everything, they will get their blue card. Have them contact me if they have any questions.

DinoDeathMarchCampers

The weekend of Oct 19-21, 2012, the scouts of Troop 287 learned a bit about why they call this tradition campout “Dino Death March.” The boys hiked 5.3 miles to the site of 120 million year-old dinosaur tracks. Also along the way was a homestead cemetery and petroglyph markings. The hike in all ended up being 12 miles (which counts towards their hiking merit badge).

During the campout, the scouts did well on their campfire programs, speeches, and inter-faith worship service as part of the Communications merit badge. Photos below (you can click on each photo for a larger image that you can also download and save to your own computer, if you’d like):

DinoDeathMarchTracks

The boys at the dino tracks area … were almost more interested in the small pond fish!

DinoDeathMarchTarantula

Yup, that’s a tarantula spider on Swanie’s hat.

DinoDeathMarchSnake

Yup, that’s a snake … but just a little one that Michael found.

DinoDeathMarchSundayService

A nice Sunday service to end the campout on a note of reverence.
