We had an incredible overnight backpacking trip through Stanley Canyon!  All the kids did great and were challenged by the steep terrain and difficult footing.  These are just a few of the great pics!  You can view all the pictures at the following link.

Troop 287 will meet at the church at 7:30 am Saturday to begin our weekend backpacking trek.  Bring all your gear and food, make sure your water bottles are full, and get ready for some fun!  We’ll do a last minute gear check, hand out sleeping pads to those that need them, and pack up our new troop backpacking tents.  We’ll return mid-afternoon on Sunday.

Please bring a signed BSA waiver on Saturday.  The “BSA Parent Permission Form” is available on the website, under “Downloads” in the right hand column.

The picture above is from the Stanley Canyon trail (accessed from the USAF Academy).

See you Saturday!

For Tuesday’s Scout meeting we will meet at 5 pm at the Colorado Springs Utilities facility on Mesa Drive (2855 Mesa Drive).  We will get a tour of the Xeriscape garden beginning at 5 pm, and also receive a presentation on Water Wise conservation.  These presentations fulfill important Second Class rank requirements and will run until 6:30 pm.

Shakedown for this weekends backpacking trip:  At 6:30 pm, we will have a quick backpacking shakedown in the parking lot at the Colorado Springs Utilities facility.  Scouts should bring all their gear packed in their backpack so we can make sure they are good to go, and also bring their meal plan.  If you let me know of any items you need (backpack, sleeping bag, pad, etc.) we will find something for you to use.  The weather looks great!! This will be a fun introduction to backpacking for the younger Scouts, and older Scouts can hone backpacking skills.  See the previous post below for all the info on the trip!

Boy Scout Ready for Summer Camp

Ready for some backpacking?!!  Troop 287 is heading up Stanley Canyon (accessed from the USAF Academy) from 17-18 Oct (Sat/Sun).  Meet at the church on Saturday, 17 Oct, at 7:30 am, and we’ll return late Sunday afternoon.

Eat a hearty breakfast prior to showing up.  Scouts will be responsible for planning/purchasing/packing/preparing their own individual backpacking meals with the Troop Jetboil backpacking stoves.  Scouts need to plan 2 trail lunches (Sat/Sun), a hot meal Saturday night, a hot breakfast Sunday morning, and 2 trail snacks.

Importantly, scouts will need a sleeping bag rated to at least 20 F!   Scouts should bring all gear packed in their backpack to the meeting on Tuesday, 13 October, for a shakedown so we make sure everybody has the required items for a successful trip.

This will be a great trip for both seasoned scouts and our newest scouts.  Don’t miss the fun!

If you have any questions or need some gear (backpack, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, etc.) please let me know as we have access to some of these items (jonu_1999@yahoo.com).

This Sunday WUMC will host the Soup Kitchen at Sacred Heart church (2021 W. Pikes Peak Ave, Colorado Springs, 80904, at the corner of Colorado Blvd and 21st). As usual, Troop 287 will setup, serve, and cleanup. Please be at Sacred Heart at 5:45 pm in Class A shirt.

This is a great way for scouts to earn service hours for rank advancement.  For Tenderfoot scouts, serving at the church will fulfill the service hour requirement to make Second Class!

Please contact me at jonu_1999@yahoo.com if you have any questions.

We will meet at WUMC from 6:30 – 8 pm for our meeting on Tuesday.  Note the earlier time!  Please bring a compass (if you have one) and try to get to the meeting on time as we’ll be running through the famous (or soon to be famous) WUMC orienteering course!  We’ll also be identifying 10+ native species of plant to complete a first class requirement.  Please bring your scout handbook as we should be able to complete several rank requirements.

We will be rescheduling the high ropes course for a later date.  Apparently there was some vandalism at the course over the weekend.

If you have any questions please contact me at jonu_1999@yahoo.com.

UPDATE:  BRING A COMPASS (IF YOU HAVE ONE) FOR THE ORIENTEERING COURSE!  For those scouts that signed up during the Court of Honor we’ll be camping this Sat-Sun in the vicinity of the WUMC church barn (hereafter referred to as Camp Wilson!).  Show time is 12 pm Saturday and we’ll be done at 11 am Sunday morning.  Please eat lunch prior to arrival (or bring a sack lunch with you) and bring a signed waiver (if you didn’t fill one out at the COH).  We’ll cook dinner, deserts, and breakfast during the campout.  Saturday night at 7:30 pm we will have a campfire and program at the barn and families are invited to attend and share in the special desert….bring a chair!  During the day we’ll be working on rank advancement activities (lashings, fire building, cooking, orienteering, etc.).

Things to bring to Camp Wilson:  Scout Handbook, pen, sleeping bag and pad, clothes, hat/gloves, flashlight, knife (if you’ve earned the Totin’ chit), camp chair (optional),.  You can pack all items in a duffel bag or backpack.  I have 7 scouts signed up for the Camp.

If you have any questions shoot me an e-mail at jonu_1999@yahoo.com.  See you Saturday!

Just a reminder, Court of Honor is this coming Tuesday, September 15, 2015! Everyone is invited & welcomed to attend!
