Just a friendly reminder that we will be holding scoutmaster conferences tonight at 738pm at the church for those that need them.  Right now I’m tracking 4 boys:

  • Ignacio – Second Class
  • Jack – Second Class
  • Preston – Second Class
  • Mark – Tenderfoot

I will be there and if we can have at least three other scoutmaster arrive to help that would be awesome.

Board of Reviews will be at 9am on Saturday at the church right after the first Flags are put out

Sea Base 2019

BSA Troop 287 —  November 7, 2017 — Leave a comment

Parents and Scouts,

It seems like a ways away but registration for our High Adventure Camps is already open for summer 2019. There are three high adventure camps…Sea Base (Sailing in the Florida Keys), Philmont (Long hikes over 11 Days in New Mexico), and Boundary Waters/Northern Tier (Canoeing in Minnesota).  Scouts must have completed the 8th great or be 14 years old.  We will have a lot in the summer of 2019.  The boys seemed to want to do Sea Base in 2019, Philmont in 2020 and Northern Tier in 2021.

Sea Base has many adventures at Sea.  Sailing, Fishing, Snorkling, Diving, etc. We would live on a sailboat for a week and do all those things.

The cost is about $7,000-$8000 for a crew.  Sounds like a lot but if we can get 10 people there it lowers the cost.

I have been to Sea Base with my older son and it was amazing!

Check out the adventures we can have!!

Troop,

Tonight we are talking about the hazards of using drugs by going over the Boy Scout “DRUGS: A DEADLY GAME” book. This will meet rank advancement requirements for those that need it.

Scouts may also have rank advancements signed off and merit badges completed in preparation of the upcoming Court of Honor.

Thanks

Sean

Just a reminder for upcoming events. Due to Thanksgiving being the 3rd wk of November, we’ve rescheduled some of our events for this month. Committee Meeting will be this week Tuesday November 7th at 7:30pm. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend. We’ll discuss Troop business, activities and plan November Court of Honor. We are also still looking to fill some open positions on the committee – Flag Coordinator, New Member Coordinator, and Outdoor Coordinator.

Court of Honor will be held the second Tuesday of the month on November 14. Set-up will begin at 5:30pm. Dinner will start at 6:00pm and the ceremony around 7:00pm. The Sign-Up Genius for Thanksgiving dinner will be out soon! We will need at least 3 families to make a turkey this year!

Also, a reminder for Veteran’s Day Flags on Saturday,  November 11th. We are still short 1 driver & I navigator for the PM shift. Please help your fellow Scouts out and sign up if you are available. This is the last flag holiday for the 2017 season. Let’s finish strong! We’re still looking for someone to take over for Flags. Ideally, it should be a Committee Member so that the Scoutmasters are available for outing and activities.

See you all on Tuesday!

Sandy

Just a reminder, tomorrow is the Veteran’s Day Parade! Come out & support the SF Association members and all those who have served. It would be great to have a large turn out of Scouts to support this organization that has given so much to our Troop. The SF Association has always supported our Troop with funds for our scholarship fund and by donating equipment! Let’s show them how much we appreciate them!!!

We’ll be meeting at the VFW 101 at 702 S. Tejon St, Colorado Springs, CO 80903 at 7:30am (please note updated time)!

See you all in the morning!

Sandy

Hello all!

We only that three scouts signed up for the Veteran’s Day Parade with the Special Forces association. Please go to activity sign up and come walk with some of America’s Finest!!!

We are also in need for some more drivers and scouts for Veteran’s day flags on Nov 11th.  This is a great way for you to earn money.

Sean

Troop,

There is no meeting on the 31st so you all can have a very safe and Happy Halloween! Wear something that makes you visible to traffic, let your parents inspect your candy (but don’t let them pick out all the good stuff!!), stay away from clowns, and have fun!

Troop,

This is a pretty cool Volunteer opportunity.  The World Arena is asking for 4 Adults and 4 Scouts to help at the door to issue ski passes and mark tickets at the new Warren Miller movie on Saturday Nov 4th at the Pikes Peak Center.  Everyone would need to be there from 4pm to 9pm.  There are two shows that evening and after everyone is seated after the first show, the volunteers could also watch the show.  Volunteer might also get free hockey tickets for a future game.

Please signup by Monday morning so we can let them know if we can do it or not.

Its last minute notice but our Charter Organization is asking for some volunteers Sunday to help park cars for their Harvest Party.  We are looking at 4 Adults and 4 Scouts for 1-2 hours. This counts towards rank advancement volunteer hours. All ranks require volunteer hours. Please support Wilson United Methodist Church.

Just a reminder that tomorrow’s night’s meeting is Manitou Haunted Tours for Game night.  We are meeting in a small parking lot across the street from Hell’s Kitchen Pizza in Manitou Springs. Hell’s Kitchen Pizza is located at 9 Ruxton Ave, Manitou Springs, CO 80829.

The cost is $10 per person in cash (discounted from $15 per person for being scouts). I will collect the cash and pay the tour guide. If  you want to use your scout account, the please let me know in advance. All Family is invited and this tour is family friendly. All stories are pulled from real historical events.  We are meeting Tuesday the 24th, Tomorrow night, at 645pm and it will run to 830pm.  Please arrive in time to find parking and dress for the weather….

This will be super cool so I hope we have a lot of scouts and families attend!  This is not something that you can do just anytime. This is a special event for the troop.

You can check out the link to the tour site here! http://manitoulegends.com/blackcoffee/index.html

We are not doing the Haunted Mines in the mall….

Sean

Parents,

We still need one driver to help us transport the scouts to this weekends campout.  Blake and I do not have enough seatbelt in our cars for all the scouts.

Also, Friday night mean is on your own so bring a Subway Sandwich or something….

Please also bring or sign a permission slip when you drop off your scout.

Thanks

Sean

Folks,

We have enough adult leaders for this weekends campout but we need one more Driver to bring us up there. We have 10 Scouts signed and do not have enough seat belts yet.  We do have an additional driver for the ride back on Sunday. If you can drive please contact me ASAP.

Folks,

Slight change to our halloween game night meeting. Haunted Mines was at the mall and would have cost us $20 a person. We are now doing Manitou Hauntings not Haunted Mines!! Manitou Hauntings will run a haunted walking tour of Manitou Springs for a discounted rate of $10 a scout. All the happens that we will learn about are pulled from historical archives such as newspapers and such…so, everything we will talk of will be REAL!!! Our tour guide, Stephanie Waters has written 6 books on the subject. Here is the link to the tour site: http://manitoulegends.com/blackcoffee/index.html

The tour will be a walking tour so wear comfortable shoes and dress for the weather. It will run about 1.5 hours so plan on being done by 830pm. Also feel free to dress spooky or in your halloween costume.

Siblings and family members are welcome. The host said its ok for all ages.  The cost is $10 per person and it must be in Cash. I will collect the cash the night of the event. We will meet across the street from Hell’s Kitchen Pizza in Manitou Springs at 645pm.  Hell’s Kitchen pizza is located at 9 Ruxton Ave, Manitou Springs, CO 80829.

Just a reminder… We are having a Leader’s meeting at my house tomorrow, Thursday, October 19 at 6:30pm to discuss planning, upcoming events and leader roles and responsibilities. All Scoutmasters and Committee Members are welcomed to attend. The meeting will be at my house in the Winding Oaks neighborhood. My address is on the Troop calendar. Please txt me if you have any questions or need directions.

See you then…

Scouts & Families,

Tomorrow’s meeting will be all about prepping for our campout this coming weekend! It’s going to be a great outing! We are still in need of one more adult to help transport Scouts to & from the site. Some of the Scouts were interested in hiking out and camping out in the wilderness on Saturday night; for that we would need two more adult leaders to attend the campout. We can discuss this more at tomorrow’s meeting.

Popcorn News:  Popcorn order forms are due tomorrow at the meeting. Tomorrow is the only time to turn them in at a meeting because of game night next week. If you do not bring your order form to the meeting tomorrow then it will be your responsibility to get them to Jessica H. for her to turn in to council so you get your popcorn order filled. If you are not going to be at the meeting tomorrow and you have an order form, please get ahold of Sean or myself and let us know so the forms don’t get turned in to Council without your Scouts’.

Lastly, next week’s meeting is game night and is on the calendar. Game night will be on Thurs, Oct 26 from 6:45pm – 7:45pm at the Haunted Mines, which is now located at Chapel Hills Mall. The cost is $20/person. More information can be found on the calendar with a link to the Haunted Mines.

See you tomorrow,

Sandy

Hello Troop,

We have our next camping trip coming up from the 20th – 22nd at Glen Aspen Boy Scout Ranch in Woodland Park.  Our next Tuesday meeting will focus on getting prepared for the campout.  Our Scouts planned an awesome trip!  They elected to make this campout a cooking competition during breakfast and dinner and do some orienteering/hike trips during the day. We will also play some fun skills competition during the day by making apparatus though lashings and knots.

Here is a packing list guide that the scouts can use for the trip:

https://boyslifeorg.files.wordpress.com/2014/04/cold.pdf

Please add a compass to this. Every scout should have a good compass.

The Scout DO NOT need to bring their personal gear to the next meeting because we will be going through troop gear and doing final planning of the campout.

This is also a great opportunity for scouts to accomplish many Rank Advancements and merit badges of their choosing. All scouts should look in their books and plan ahead of what items they need to get done individually before the camp out.

Bring ideas to the campout to help the SPL and ASPL to plan it out Tuesday.

Please remember to sign up on Sign Up Genius. There is now a link on the top of the troop website where you can find all the Sign Up Activities: https://www.bsatroop287.org/activity-sign-up/

We have two adults going at this time. The scouts wanted to do an out and back overnighter back pack excursion and we would need two more adults to make this happen.

We will arrive at the church at 530pm on the 20th and will be back at the church before noon on the 22nd.
