Marksmen,

We will meet at Wilson United Methodist Church on Friday, 20 Sep @ 330pm to start our camping/shooting weekend. I have been able to cover safety, rifle parts/functions and some sighting classes but I need 1.5 additional hours prior to leaving to teach them body position and shooting fundamentals. I will conduct this training on Friday from 330-5pm during daylight, while they are fresh. I understand that scouts in District 20 do not get released from school until 335pm, but due to the importance of this class, I hope you will be able to check them out a bit early and get them to the church by 330pm.

– Make sure you arrive with all the scout’s camping gear packed and ready to go.
– Have the scout’s permission slip signed.
– Scouts need to bring their Rifle Shooting Merit Badge Worksheet.
– Have one meal packed for the Scout’s Friday night dinner.
– Scouts will need to arrive in Class A’s for Travel.
– Scouts should pack IAW their camping checklist in the Scout Handbook (pg. 257 in my son’s handbook). However, Scouts backpacks should include a sleeping bag rated to at least 30 degrees, long sleeve shirt and pants for shooting, change of clothes (to include socks), hat, wet weather gear (Poncho/Rain Jacket), sleeping pad, personal hygiene gear, cold weather gear (the forecast is sunny with highs in the mid 70s and lows in the mid 40s), mess kits, pen, notebook, sunscreen and a rag for cleaning a gun. Optional: a tarp or poncho for putting on the ground during shooting, camera, $ in case we stop for a snack on the way back.
– Bring a Nalgene or Camel Back to stay hydrated on the Range.
– Safety Glasses and Hearing protection will be provided but scouts can bring their own if they choose too. I bring mine because it’s usually better.
– Scouts working on their Wilderness Survival Merit Badge need to bring a material to start a fire without a match or lighter.
– Josh J is purchasing the food for the weekend so scouts do not need to purchase their own meals other than Friday night’s dinner. Scout can bring healthy snacks if they like.

My phone number is 719.648.6798 if you need to get a hold of me. We are traveling to Peaceful Valley Scout Ranch: http://www.denverboyscouts.org/camping/boy-scouts/peaceful-valley/45795

I will have your scouts back at Wilson Methodist Church before lunch on Sunday the 22nd. Your Scout will call you to let you know when we are on our way back.

Feel free to call if you have any questions.

Sean Warner

Environmental Science MBThe boys of Troop 287 will be doing the Environmental Science merit badge at Cheyenne Mountain Zoo on Saturday, Nov 2. This is one of the Eagle required merit badges and one we DON’T do during troop meetings (because of all the materials needed to do the merit badge). Probably the next best opportunity to earn this merit badge will be at summer camp.

Location: Cheyenne Mountain Zoo
Time: 9:30 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Cost: $26.25 per scout (CLICK HERE to register and pay online now)
Uniform: Class A

We’ll also need to adults to attend as well. Not certain if there’s a cost for an adult to attend or not yet.

Due to certain time constraints, some sections of this merit badge may not be completed at the Zoo: Pollution Prevention (3F1 or 3F2) List 10 ways to prevent pollution and practice two of these at home for 7 days. This Homework will need to be completed ahead of time.

Kathy approved the July minutes. Jen seconded.

Flags Discussion

Kathy distributed the new sign up sheet.

Jen will create a document with guidelines for approval.

  • SPL will call 2 nights before to confirm boys and drivers.
  • Wait list boys will have the first opportunity to sign up for the next time

It was suggested that we can add the sign up sheet on website

Kathy will post the next two holidays

Sean, Kathy and Sandy are working out the new routes to more evenly divide time it takes.

Joyce suggested we look at the activities that boys are participating at the time of board of review. The committee will relook at the policies and procedures and see if this is being addressed already or needs to be added. Flag coordinator should track this for the flags.  They will check off people when they arrive.

The committee needs to check the inventory of fliers to see if we need to order more. It was suggested that the each driver carry some fliers. Kathy suggested we put the sign out again. Jen will display at her house on Labor Day

Scholarship Application

Kathy handed out the scholarship guidelines and the application. Treasurer will verify that the funds are being used for proper activities. The application will go to Scout master and then passed to committee chair. Committee chair will distribute via email to approval or discussion at next meeting.

Suggestions for revision were made.  Joyce approved the approval application pending changes that Kathy makes. Sandy seconded. Kathy will announce at the COH. Applications open immediately.

Scoutmaster Report  – not present

Treasurer’s Report  – Kathy

Kathy met with Rotary. The troop has received payment from flags. We took a hit with the two missed holidays last year.  This will be ok with approved budget but we will be cautious with expenditures.  Jen approved the budget. Dan seconded.

Jim suggested we do a fundraiser that would donate $5 for houses that burned in Mountain Shadows and Black Forest in the Veteran’s Day parade. Kathy will see if this is possible.

Joyce suggested we march in more parades. We can bring this up to the boys. Perhaps the Coronado homecoming parade in October.

Advancements Report – Joyce

There will be a lot of advancements at the next COH. Some board of reviews last week, some this week. Not as much activity as in the past. Jim suggested making phone calls to scouts that are not showing up. Kathy and Jen were both present at Stephan’s Eagle conference.

There was discussion around setting up an Eagle Alumni cookout.

Next Meeting – September 10, 6:30PM

Troop 287 Cyclists,

Please mark the following dates to complete the Cycling Merit Badge rides. The only days I could constantly fit into my calendar for these rides are Sundays. With the exception of the 50 miler, they are all in the afternoon so Scouts can practice their religious beliefs on Sunday Mornings. Additionally, I fully support another parents/leaders that can lead rides on additional days if someone can fit it into their schedule. The goal is not to have this merit badge hanging over our heads for a year!

All bikers must be prepared by bringing two water bottles or Camel Back, a flat tire kit, heathy snacks, and be prepared for the weather. A few buck on the longer ride would be practical to buy water or more snacks along the route. Dates could change pending weather. Make sure bikes are “Ride Ready” by ensuring the chain is lubed, seat post adjusted to the right hight, and tires are inflated to the proper marked amount. Parents should be available by cell phone to pick up their scout should their be a mechanical failure that cannot be fixed during the ride… unless someone volunteers to run a SAG vehicle. Exact routes will be shared prior to the ride.

10 Miler – Oct 6th @ 1pm at Garden of the Gods Trading Post
10 Miler – Oct 13th @ 1pm at Goose Gossage Park
15 Miler – Oct 20th @ 1 pm at Costco Parking Lot
15 Miler – Oct 27th @ 1pm at America the Beautiful Park
25 Miler – Nov 3rd @ 1pm atGarden of the God Trading Post
25 Miler – Nov 17th @ 1pm at Goose Gossage Park
50 Miler – Dec 1st @ 9 am at Palmer Lake (Santa Fe Trailhead)

Mr. Warner

Hi there Troop 287,

It is time again for the Troop Committee to meet.  We would like to invite all the parents in the troop to participate in this Commttee Meeting.  You do not need to be a registered leader to attend the meeting and give us your valuable feedback and ideas.

Hope to see many new faces.

Kathy Kaelin – Troop 287 Treasurer/Camp Coordinator

Personal_FitnessAll Scouts participating in the Personal Fitness merit badge should show up at Eagleview Middle School at 6:30 pm on Tuesday, September 10th for our final fitness test.  Prior to completing the fitness test I’ll need to review your fitness log to ensure you’ve completed your 12 week fitness program. Please wear fitness attire.  After completing the running portion (1 mile or 9 minutes) of the fitness test we’ll head over to the church for the regular meeting and to complete the rest of the fitness assessment (pushups, situps, pullups, flexibility).   Please bring your workbooks and your Scout shirt for the meeting and we’ll see you Tuesday!

Troop 287 survivalists,

Keep working on that Wilderness Survival Merit Badge for those that started on the Lost Wilderness Creek Backpacking Trip. Here’s a couple things you can do to keep moving forward:
– (req 5) Put together a personal survival kit and explain how each item in it could be useful.
– Fill out the following requirements on your worksheet and show them to me:
(req 1) Hazards, (req 2) seven priorities, (req 3) Ways to avoid panic and maintain morale, (req 4) Describe the steps you would take to survive in multiple situations, (req 9) Explain how to protect yourself from insects, reptiles and bears (req 12) Explain why it usually not wise to eat edible wild plants or wildlife in a survival situation.

Be prepared to discuss all the above in a group plus the remaining requirements. Finally, schedule some time with the SPL to reserve a few minutes to start a fire without a match or lighter in a fire pit. The troop has a portable fire pit to accomplish this requirement. I recommend using a batter and steel wool or a magnifying glass.

For the scouts in the middle of the personal fitness merit badge I’ll be accomplishing a progress check at the Tuesday meeting.

The merit badge requires completion of an approved 12 week physical fitness program.  At this point each scout should have an approved program and one progress check with my initials.  It’s very important to stay on track with your fitness program so that you can show improvements at our final fitness test which will occur in late September.  Please bring your workbook so we can discuss your progress towards this Eagle required merit badge.

See you Tuesday!

Mr. Ullmann

The boys of Troop 287 did a fantastic job on the 15- mile backpacking trip. This turned out to be quite a bit tougher and longer than we expected. Nonetheless, the boys persevered with tremendous spirits and attitudes. No doubt, this will be a trip they will remember and talk about for years to come.

Additionally, Christian successfully completed his scoutmaster conference for First Class rank and Michel completed his for the rank of Eagle while on the trip. Congrats to both scouts!

The boys also got a start on their Wilderness Survival merit badge as they learned different methods of purifying water, starting fires without a match, and even building a survival shelter and sleeping in it for a night.
