Troop 287 survivalists,

Keep working on that Wilderness Survival Merit Badge for those that started on the Lost Wilderness Creek Backpacking Trip. Here’s a couple things you can do to keep moving forward:
– (req 5) Put together a personal survival kit and explain how each item in it could be useful.
– Fill out the following requirements on your worksheet and show them to me:
(req 1) Hazards, (req 2) seven priorities, (req 3) Ways to avoid panic and maintain morale, (req 4) Describe the steps you would take to survive in multiple situations, (req 9) Explain how to protect yourself from insects, reptiles and bears (req 12) Explain why it usually not wise to eat edible wild plants or wildlife in a survival situation.

Be prepared to discuss all the above in a group plus the remaining requirements. Finally, schedule some time with the SPL to reserve a few minutes to start a fire without a match or lighter in a fire pit. The troop has a portable fire pit to accomplish this requirement. I recommend using a batter and steel wool or a magnifying glass.
